Both kings and high dignitaries, as well as sacred animals, were buried in this area. The Pyramid of Djoser, who was a pharaoh of the Third Dynasty, is known as the Step Pyramid. This pyramid is unique in its kind and predates those of Giza. It rises in six steps on each of the four sides to the apex.
