The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is a large museum (490,000 square meters), located in the ancient city of Fustat, now part of Cairo. The museum partially opened in February 2017. It has a collection of 50,000 artifacts that present the Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to the present. Officially open to the public on April 4, 2021 after the arrival of the mummies of the pharaohs to the site after a large public parade. The permanent collection is divided into two categories: one chronological and the other thematic. The chronological areas are the following: archaic, pharaonic, Greco-Roman, Coptic, medieval, Islamic, modern and contemporary periods. The thematic areas are as follows: dawn of civilization, the Nile, writing, state and society, material culture, beliefs and thought and the gallery of royal mummies. The collections were transferred from other Egyptian museums such as the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the Coptic Museum, the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo, and the Manial Palace and Museum in Cairo, and the Museum of Royal Jewels in Alexandria. On April 3, 2021, twenty-two royal mummies, including eighteen kings in chronological order from Seqenenra Taa who opened the procession to Ramses IX and four queens (Ahmose Nefertari, Ahmose Meritamun, Hatshepsut and Tiye), were transported to their new location from the Museum Egyptian from Cairo in a large public and televised event worldwide and via the Internet called Golden Parade of the Pharaohs in which they crossed the streets of Cairo in special golden sarcophagi with controlled temperature, aboard armored military vehicles and decorated for the occasion , accompanied by a military band, horse guards and actors dressed in ancient Egyptian fashion playing priests and priestesses, dancers, bearers of offerings and young people in chariots replicas of those found disassembled in the tombs.
